A miscellaneous collection of narrow gauge tank wagons was numbered in the 7900 range. I think they were all privately owned, but have been unable to confirm this as being the reason for creating this unique number range. Some of the tanks seem to have run with unusual classifications which were later changed to fit into the Commonwealth classification system. It is quite likely that these represent Army tank wagons that eventually got sold as war surplus by the Disposals Commission.

Ownership of the various wagons is confusing as they where sold to different companies who on sold them to other companies. The prefix "TS" were Shell cars, "TV" Vacuum (Mobil), "TX" Caltex. The Mobil (Vacuum Oil) tanks had "R" numbers which the railways did not recognise. Many of the tanks passed from Commonwealth Railways to South Australian Railways control and back again depending on the private owners traffic requirements.
