JU/R Tank wagons -- JU and R 231 to 237 and 248 to 249

Narrow gauge Tank wagons, which were classified "R" and allocated road number 231 through 237 and 248 through 249. These vehicles appear to have been owned by various petroleum companies and where imported into the system initially with existing classifications. They probabily all got converted to "NTO".

A number of these vehicles appear to have been "JU" class tank wagons from Western Australia. Eleven JU class bogie old tank wgons were taken over by the Commonwealth. The first batch was in September 1943, which consisted of JU 214, 215, 216, 230, 231, 236 and 237. In March 1944 as second batch was taken over consisting of JU 217, 220, 225 and 232. By 1945 the eleven JU tanks had been considered surplus on account of still being fitted with WAGR type buffers. The rollignstock return of 1948 shows that all JU had been returned, but it seems that some may have actually been sold to Vacuum oil (Mobil) and a some later date passed to Shell.

Note: all the records for these vehicles are rather confusing so some of the dates as to when the entered into Commonwealth control may be wrong.
