Commonwealth Engineering, Bassendean, Western Australia, was awarded a contract in 1966 to construct 20 open wagons. They were classified "GMX" and allocated road numbers 1848 through 1867. It appears that some of the initial wagons got coded as "GL" class being changed to "GMX" about six months later.
